Russian, or elephant garlic is more closely related to leeks than garlic — if you’re familiar with either you’d recognise this by the way the leaves grow. The bulbs also produce little bulblets (bulbils) as leeks do.
Elephant garlic has a mild-enough taste that it can be used raw!
It has an interesting growth habit — the individual cloves, when separated and planted individually, will grow into one very large, single ‘mono-bulb’ and not produce a flowering spike this first year.
These mono-bulbs (also called ‘rounds’) usually grow into bulbs with cloves in their second year (that is now for these plants), and produce a 1 – 2m flower spike with a big ball of pink or purple flowers on top. These flower spikes are developing right now, as you can see from the photo.The plant usually alternates between rounds and bulbs every year this way, and flower/go to seed every second year. Bulbils may grow every year from both the mono-bulbs and the bulbs and these can be grown on individually as well — again these will produce a round the first year and a proper bulb the second.
One plant here should multiply for you nicely over the next couple of years if you don’t eat it all!
I potted rounds into 3 litre Air-Pot containers partly for the aesthetics, as this is a striking ornamental plant as well as an edible one, and partly because the whole onion family grows well in these containers.
